Fernando Marqués, DVM, Diplomate ACVIM, Diplomate ACVSMR
Dr. Marqués obtained his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Buenos Aires. He was a successful practitioner for many years in Argentina, practicing sports medicine on top-notch dressage and show jumping horses competing at the highest level. Besides providing an excellent service, creating client loyalty was one of the most important pillars to build his practice and clientele.
In 2002, Dr. Marqués decided to expand his formal scientific and clinical training and completed a 3-year Residency Program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and became a Board-Certified Specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine (“Diplomate ACVIM”). Thereafter, in 2006, he joined the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM), University of Saskatchewan, as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine, where he was granted tenure status, a high achievement in the academic field. He worked as one of the Board-Certified Specialist at the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC), WCVM, a renowned referral clinic serving all of western Canada.
While in Canada Dr. Marqués also held important leadership positions such as Assistant Hospital Director for the Large Animal Clinic at the VMC, Chair of the Equine Health Research Fund, and Chair of the Equine Health and Welfare Committee of the Saskatchewan Horse Federation.
In 2013, Dr. Marqués was appointed as an Equine Subject Matter Expert by the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME), now called International Council for Veterinary Assessment (ICVA), for the development of the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination (NAVLE), and other tests used by Universities and State Licensing Boards. He now serves as a Board of Director At-Large member for this prestigious organization.
In 2016 Dr. Marqués returned to UW-Madison, School of Veterinary Medicine, as a Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Equine Sports Medicine. Based on his scientific and clinical experience and background Dr. Marqués was granted “Permanent Appointment” by the University of Wisconsin. In 2019 Dr. Marqués obtained his second Board Certification as a Specialist, and became a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (“Diplomate ACVSMR”).
Besides his clinical work, Dr. Marqués conducted many research projects, and authored numerous scientific articles and book chapters in the fields of equine internal medicine and sports medicine. He serves as a scientific reviewer for many peer-reviewed scientific journals including “Equine Veterinary Education”, “Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine”, “Canadian Veterinary Journal”, and “Journal of Equine Veterinary Sciences”. Dr. Marqués is frequently invited as a speaker in many National and International Veterinary Seminars and Conferences.
In addition to his work as an internal medicine and sports medicine and rehabilitation Board-Certified specialist, Dr. Marqués worked as a show jumping instructor and coach for several years. He enjoys both coaching and competing and has experience leading equestrian teams in competition.
